Effective Altruism (often shortened to EA) is a social movement focused on using reason and evidence to do the most good.

Will MacAskill, one of the co-founders of the movement, formalised the definition of Effective Altruism as having two parts:[1]

  1. using reason and evidence to understand how to do the most good, with 'good' defined in welfarist terms
  2. using the above to actually do good in the world
